Australian Nunn's Birdeater (Phlogius sp. "Rockhampton")

Nunn’s Birdeater ( Phlogius sp. Rockhampton) is a massive, highly sought-after Australian tarantula. Known as one of the largest and heaviest species in the country, adult females rival the size of a dinner plate, reaching leg spans up to 20 cm. They are native to Central Queensland's dry eucalypt forests and hard red soils. Appearance: Striking coloration that deepens to a jet black after molting. They feature thick, segmented legs covered in long setae (bristles). Temperament: They are generally reclusive, nocturnal, and docile but can be defensive if threatened. Diet: A strict diet of appropriately sized insects, such as crickets and woodies (roaches). Habitat & Captive Care: Because of their arid-to-semi-arid natural environment near Rockhampton, they differ slightly in care from strictly tropical tarantulas: Enclosure: Requires a terrarium setup with a deep, specialized substrate mix suitable for burrowing, as they construct silk-lined burrows. Handling: Like most Australian tarantulas, handling is strongly discouraged to prevent the spider from falling and injuring itself.
